Wokingham United Charities

Sheltered Housing with Support for Older People and Grants for those in Need

Relief of Poverty Charity

Aims and Objectives
The relief of poverty, hardship or distress of persons resident in the civil parishes of Wokingham, Wokingham Without, St Nicholas, Hurst, Ruscombe and Finchampstead, in the county of Berkshire, designated  ‘the area of benefit’ .

This charity relieves generally or individually, persons resident in the area of benefit who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress by making grants of money or providing or paying for items, services of facilities calculated to reduce the need, hardship or distress of such persons.

In the main these grants are delivered via various support agencies and many items are acquired through community furniture projects.

The trustees believe that the supply of these goods such as furniture, white goods and other items through the community projects is the way forward as these items are reasonably priced, they are being reused and it enables the resources of the charity to go further and therefore help more people.

The trustees fund applications for grants particularly from agencies such as Social Services, Housing Support, Community Development Workers, Headteachers and organisations supporting the armed services.

The charity is unable to:-
  • fund items that are the obligation of the state or local authority
  • buy floor coverings of any type (unless there are very exceptional circumstances)
  • pay off debts

Most applications will be for an amount under £500. However, in particular circumstances the Trustees will consider requests for more than this amount.

Applications for grants to individuals need to be made on the attached form.  The application must supported by an appropriate letter from a supporting professional agency (such as social services.)

Request an application form by emailing grants@westende.org.uk or by downloading the application Form here (pdf) or here (doc).

  • Complete the application form answering all sections as fully as possible
  • Post your completed application form with all supporting documents to the Charity's office
